One of the major issues in America right now, whether the GOP wants to admit it or not, is the fact that racial tensions are at an all-time high. Moreover, it seems as if racists have become braver in showing their true colors especially when it comes in the form of protesting and violence.

Right now, America needs a strong leader to condemn the growth and blatant display of white supremacy that has become so commonplace as of late. However, when looking to the leaders in Washington, America is coming up short.

In a tweet that endorsed Ed Gillespie, who is running for the governorship of Virginia, President Donald Trump showed his lack of concern for the feelings of those hurt by the display, insensitivity, and hatred behind white supremacy. One of the major issues that racists are making a big deal out of is the removal of statues commemorating Confederate “heroes” in cities across America. Black men and women pay their taxes.

Yet, they have to look at a blatant reminder of America’s dark period in history. Gillespie sides with the white supremacists in continuing to memorialize the history of the “glorious South.” Trump endorsed Gillespie and even mentioned he would save the southern heritage.

‘Ed Gillespie will turn the really bad Virginia economy #’s around, and fast. Strong on crime, he might even save our great statues/heritage!’

Trump literally endorsed the commemoration of one of the most terrible eras in American history. A piece of marble with a dead guy who owned slaves, abused them, held them against their will, and made them work until they were broken is more important than the feelings of actual Americans who pay their taxes and live in this country right now? That’s Trump, however. It shouldn’t be surprising. It’s painful to see, though. It’s 2017, and America is moving backward, and a sitting U.S. president is encouraging that regression. Furthermore, those statues honor traitors to the United States as they seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy.

Twitter users voiced their anger over the tweet, noting that Trump’s obsession with keeping the statues up was racist and beyond inappropriate.
