Still seething over the failure of the Senate to take health care away from millions of Americans, President Trump took to Twitter today to threaten to unilaterally cease the payments to insurance companies that form the basis of Obamacare.

Known as Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments, these are the reimbursements to insurance companies that keep the deductibles, copayments, and premiums that Americans pay more affordable than they would otherwise be.

The irony of discussing “imploding ObamaCare” while forcibly pushing it to implode is seemingly lost on the president who seems more obsessed with turning his massive loss of face into a win than in making sure that the US has a viable healthcare plan that benefits all of its citizens.

Rather than being “forced to live” with the Affordable Care Act, the failure of the Senate to repeal Obamacare in any way whatsoever means that Americans will be allowed to live, rather than being forced to die because they lack affordable health care or have purchased junk insurance that doesn’t actually cover anything, two situations that were common before the passage of Obamacare.

Despite Trump’s calls to jettison the Senate voting rules governing filibusters and the 60 vote majorities needed to pass major legislation that it entails, legislation that replaces Obamacare with a system that leaves people with higher premiums & higher deductibles, and removes coverage for millions of people, is career suicide for any Republican who thinks far enough ahead to realize that sooner or later the public will wake up to what has been foisted upon them.

Perhaps today’s tweet storm is Trump’s way of replying to Republican Congressional representatives who blame his own failure to explain and sell their health care strategy to the American people. If so, all Trump has demonstrated is that he still can’t explain and sell a half-baked plan that would be detrimental to a majority of Americans while benefiting only a wealthy few.
