A Fake US embassy in the Capital City of Ghana, Accra has been busted by authorities in the country. The said “fake” embassy which operated for ten years issuing illegally obtained authentic Visas was run by a criminal network, the US state Department has reported.
The building in which the sham embassy operated did not turn away people from buying their service. The embassy was housed in a pink two-story building. Inside the building, a portrait of the US president, Barack Obama hangs.
The state Department in a statement said “It was not operated by the United States government, but by figures from both Ghanaian and Turkish organized crime rings and a Ghanaian attorney practicing immigration and criminal law,”.
Posing as consular officers were Turkish and Dutch citizens who spoke English. During the investigations, authorities also uncovered a fake Dutch embassy.
How The Fake Embassy Obtained The Visas
Although the US statement did not say how the clique obtains the visas, it was that the fake embassy issued legitimate US visas that were fraudulently obtained with false identification documents at a cost of $6,000 (£4,700) each.
“The criminals running the operation were able to pay off corrupt officials to look the other way, as well as obtain legitimate blank documents to be doctored,”
No immediate comment from Ghana’s Criminal Investigation Division has been obtained.
Over the years, demand for western country visas’ has grown, as embassies have reported that the visa market is a big target for crime groups outside the African continent.
